TARGETING NUMBER 10

One text message. That was what it was hanging on now.

When the destination had finally been revealed, I had fidgeted in my pocket. I couldn’t let anyone see what I was doing. I’d worked out the buttons to press to send a text message to Terry.

I only sent one digit – the number ‘2’. It was what we agreed. That should have been enough to tell them Downing Street was the target. Number ‘1’ had been the House of Commons, ‘3’ Westminster Abbey and ‘4’ Buckingham Palace. They had the rest of the details:7.30 a.m., 14 November, three lorries, three locations.

I wondered whether I needed to stress that each of the lorries would take an exit. Would they work that out? What if they prepared for a main-gate assault and were left red-faced when the other exits were ambushed. Surely, they’d be prepared for any eventuality. It was after 1 am when I finally had some time on my own in the Travelodge. I was tempted to call, send another text to confirm.

Yet, Terry had texted back his confirmation that he’d got and understood the message. Surely, that was enough. I couldn’t lay everything on for them, could I? They were big boys, they had to think for themselves at some point.

Even though I was dog-tired, I tossed and turned. I willed my body to sleep but the adrenalin was getting the better of me. What were these? Last-minute nerves? Guilt? Was I bothered I was betraying my new-found colleagues? Seeing the elation on their faces was something I hadn’t prepared for. They were clearly up for this. For some of the activists and volunteers who had joined in the last year or so, this was the pinnacle of their involvement, their reason for joining the cause. To stick it to the heart of government and make a political point was why some of them got out of bed in the morning. And little did they know that a spy in their midst was plotting to royally fuck it up for them.

No, I told myself. It’s your duty to inform the authorities. Greenpeace might mean well but, without prior warning, all hell could break loose when you pull a stunt in front of armed police. The ideal scenario for me would be if the coppers let them have their five minutes of fame but the forewarning means that in no way will the PM be disrupted or compromised. Not to mention me. We can all win out of this, I told myself. It will all work out fine.

It was with these thoughts running through my mind that the buzz finally subsided and I drifted off to sleep.

It was one of those nights when I felt like I’d been in the deepest slumber as the alarm rudely awakened me at 4 a.m. However, it was barely two hours later.

In half an hour, we were back at the farm. In the freezing cold we had a final briefing on the route plan.
